Our First Movie Fundraiser!

Hey Key Clubbers!

Today was our Secret Life of Pets Fundraiser event with Bronx Science Key Club. If I do say so myself, it was a grand success! We had 50 people come to our movie fundraiser and raised a total of $224.12. The money fundraised will be donated to the governor's project, Voices for the Blind. We would like to thank everyone for coming to this event and making it a success! Happy Key Clubbing and keep an eye out for more events to come!

Divisional Training Conference!

Hey Key Clubbers!

This past Saturday, June 18th, the Divisional Training Conference took place! This event was hosted by divisions 8, 8A, 9, 10, and 11. DTC was basically a mini LTC in which these 5 divisions bonded through ice breakers and by participating in different workshops. The workshops ranged from Photography to the District Project, Icing Smiles, to different workshops about the roles of officers and members. This event had a total of 3 workshops, lunch, K-Fair, and an opening and closing ceremony. Most of the District Board was present and all the funds gained at DTC were given to a little girl named Sophie. Sophie has an illness that prevents her from completing tasks normal 3 year-olds would complete. Treatment for this is approximately $4,000, but with the $10 fee from DTC, we managed to raise almost half of the costs for treatment!! Above, you can see all the members that attended DTC. We all had a great time at this event and we hope that many more members attend next year.

2015 Division 9 Ice Skating Fundraiser

 The Division 9 Ice Skating Fundraiser was a great success! We had over 70 participants from five different schools, including Dewey, Murrow and Midwood! The event started at 11 am and ended whenever you were too tired to skate. It took place at the Lefrak Center at Lakeside Prospect Park. For some people, this was their first Key Club event. Jessie Lin from Midwood High School said "It was fun and I got to make new friends." Mica Tonge also from Midwood said "My first Key Club event was more fun than I thought, everyone was friendly & helped each other out skating. The leaders helped everyone get what they needed and put everyone before themselves." We raised $215, which will be donated to the Pediatric Lyme Disease Foundation! This event was very fun and we look forward to having another one very soon.

2015 Mid-Autumn Moon Festival

 The festival was a great success! There were almost 1,000 attendees and over a hundred volunteers! The event itself was a great opportunity to meet new people, enjoy with friends and try out all the food offered in Chinatown! Volunteers had to do a variety of things such as set up the tents, work the ticket booths, do chalk drawings and supervise other stations. It was overall a great experience to enjoy the culture of Chinatown and spend time with friends.

You guys voted on 5 different designs and Lillian's design won! This year we are doing a crew neck and you guys can start handing in money for orders starting from the first club meeting.

AIDS Walk NYC 2015

 Thanks to everyone who came and walked with us! The entire walk was 10 km which is around 6 miles and I was honestly surprised. I expected the walk to be far shorter. It lasted around 3 hours and the heat was intense. We started the walk with other Key Clubs from Division 11 and 9 but later lost them. It was worth walking for a good cause and all the sponsors provided adequate food and drink. The sight of the finish line was like a light at the end of the tunnel. We walked the entire way around Central Park and ended up where we started. Compared to the March of Dimes, the AIDS Walk is far longer but the free food was great.

Once again, thanks to everyone who came and struggled with us and I hope next year we will have more people.

Peanut Day 2015

 This year, Peanut Day was an overall success. People said that it was a fun and new experience. Groups were told to go to cars at the red light and ask them to donate to Kiwanis Peanut Day. The donations go to help under-privileged children and drivers were given a pack of peanuts after their donation. Although being rejected by cars wasn't as fun. The pictures don't do it justice, but we had a pretty decent amount of people in attendance.

March of Dimes 2015

I would like to thank those who attended the March of Dimes this year and hopefully we could get even more people next year! Most of the people who RSPV'd on the Facebook event actually attended and we had a lot more people than the cemetery clean up. To recap, we walked 3.5 miles to raise awareness for research that helps babies begin a healthy life. Once again, thanks to all who came and please try to attend the events in May!

Cemetery Clean Up

Although, I cannot say I'm not disappointed, the clean up was quite successful. We did have some confusion over the address of the cemetery and I honestly expected more than myself in attendance.I believe most of the people went to the walk against domestic violence in teen relationships instead. But overall there was a sizable amount of people, mostly from Brooklyn Tech and Murrow and we helped clean up the cemetery in a timely fashion.

Inspiration

One Monday afternoon, I was sluggishly walking home after a tiresome day of school, when all of the sudden, I saw these two girls patiently standing behind a table with a plethora of pamphlets, all relating to Islam. I being naturally curious, approached them, and asked if I could have a Qu'ran.

Though looking exhausted and drained from standing outside for what seemed like hours in 80 degree weather, they received me with eagerness and welcoming hospitality. One of the girls told me that they were driven to do this because of all the stereotypes by the media of Muslims and of the Islamic religion. I was so amazed at the commitment these two girls made in taking time out of their day to educate the public about Islam that I took a picture. Though my conversation with them was brief, nevertheless, it altered my mood for the entire day. It is incredibly virtuous for these two young people to take time out of their day to do something they're passionate about and take an active stance in their community. More young people should do something like this.
